TALLAHASSEE -- Florida education officials voted Tuesday to add evolution to the course work that public schools must teach, but only after a last-minute change depicting the concept put forward by Charles Darwin as merely a theory.

The Florida Board of Education voted 4 to 3 to include the language as part of its retooling of the state's science standards for public school education. The board approved clearly labeling every scientific law and theory as such.

The standard dealing with biology now says, "The scientific theory of evolution is the fundamental concept underlying all of biology and is supported by multiple forms of scientific evidence."

A sound step that will allow Florida students to be able to compete intellectually.

Thank goodness! I'm just truly surprised it's taken this long to become part of the school system in Florida.

Besides, before we jump to any conclusions,

we must wait for the re-count!
