Full Version: 'Face' on kitchen cabinets is lifting ...

Unfortunately the warranty on something is only as good as the business giving the warranty and apparently the kitchen cabinet company went poof! before we bought here 2 years ago.

Can't find any door/drawer fronts to match so recently priced all new 'fronts' for all 26 drawers and cupboard doors - eep! - so I'm about to attempt a fix-it job myself and will truly appreciate any hints.

They seem to be faced with a vinyl (unsure if it's actually vinyl) product that has 'lifted away' on 3 of them ... sort of a full bubble effect with air between this 'vinyl' layer and the wood 'backing'.

The only thing I've been able to think of so far is:

1. Use razor blade to carefully make a slit in the vinyl where it's least noticable
2. Use one of those 'injector needle' filled with thin glue
3. Use wood rolling pin to smush all the glue around and then use it to 'push' the air out through the slit
4. Lay flat, put parchment paper on top, load with heavy books over night.

If it would be helpful, I could add a photo of one of the doors?

Thanks for any ideas!

That sounds like it could work. I've veneered some stuff before using giant vacuum bags

I have done similar Mara. What I did, was put a needle hole in the bubble.Gently sqeeze the air out, and as you say injected a small amount of adhesive, in and then I used a very small plastic roller to smooth all out.Putting a slit will be too noticableIMO.
This method has worked for me a number of times over the years and seems to last a long time. thumbup2.gif

Yipee, at least neither of you automatically said, "Impossible"! smile.gif

Okay, poke hole with needle - not a slit with razor blade - but plastic roller (?) would be better than wooden rolling pin?

Fascinated with the idea of vacumm bags, too - how would this work, please? Make a hole with needle and somehow attach one of those 'suck air out of' bags that one used for sealing off-season clothes away?

I havent used Vacuum bags so Mark can advise you on that. I do wallpaper hanging from time to time and have a baby plastic roller about 1 inch in diameter.Sure a wooden roller would work if small enough. My prob is the jug I bought has too short a chord and the steam is lifting the vinyl. I will have to give up coffee,Mara.

Gracious, can't give up coffee! For if you're anything like me, few chores around the house would get done without that great pot of coffee to 'start my engine' smile.gif
