I think I saw somewhere that one of the major auto parts stores will do a reading of the car's computer for diagnostic purposes. Does anyone know which auto parts store this might be?

for 1996 and newer models in the USA Advanced Auto will. So will many AutoZone's. If it spits out something that you and the Counter person do not understand feel free to post the Code and the year make and model of the car and i can probably help you out. (It's been a few years since i've messed with a regular car but i still remember most of the computer stuff).
For cars older than 96 try the biggest Advanced Auto in the area. -------------------- ![]() Speak softly and carry a weighted baseball bat. Then people have to listen to you. |

Thanks. We got an Advanced Auto Parts nearby that I have used occasionally. I'll have to see if they offer the service.
Here's the rest of the story: We have a 1999 Chevy Venture 3.6L V6 that has had an intermittant 'starts then stalls' issue for the last 9 months of so. Lately, has been turning into an intermittant hard start issue. Has been just a minor annoyance, but it is now getting bad enough that it's time to do something about it. Sounds like the fuel pressure is bleeding off of the fuel rail. Most likely caused by a check valve that has gone bad. Easy way to check that is to go to Walmart (or wherever) and buy one of these 50 cent tire pressure gauges that will read to approx 60 PSI (your gonna ruin this thing so dont use a good one)
1) Remove the Plastic cover from the top of the engine (usually held in place with 2 to 4 10mm bolts) 2)You should see 6 injectors connected together through a metal pipe (this is the Fuel Rail) 3) look for a Schrader Valve (looks just like the Air valves on your tires) 4) Put a pair of Latex/Nitrile gloves and safety glasses on and press the tire pressure gauge to the valve it should have at least 15 to 30 PSI on it (no it wont hurt you but fuel stings when in your eyes and stinks on your hands). If its below you may need to consult a Haynes Manual on you're vehicle to find the check valve (I have no idea where its at) While your at it you may look at putting a fuel filter on if you've noticed any hesitation when taking off, and a possible tune up (its just spark plugs and wires on that engine, really easy) If you need anything else just ask. -------------------- ![]() Speak softly and carry a weighted baseball bat.
