A German pensioner who scooped £2 million on the lottery has turned down the cash because he said would not know what to do with it.
The 70-year-old, from Hamelin, Lower Saxony, said his late wife loved playing the lottery and he had just kept on buying tickets out of habit. With his wife dead, and no children or other relatives to pass the money on to, the man told German lottery officials: "What would I do with so much money? I don't want it." Is he NUTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This post has been edited by Blackmirror: Sep 20 2007, 09:55 AM |

Wow! He must be drawing one heck of a pension!
Does he comprehend donate to others? I think not. (Now that he's won, I wonder if he continues to purchase tickets?)

Somehow I don't think this fellow can be 'quite right' mentally. After all, the lottery company isn't going to give the money to those so desperately in need in our often sad world. Geesh! Boo and hiss to him for not thinking of those less fortunate than himself.

It occurs to me that perhaps he not only doesn't need the money but more importantly doesn't need the headache and responsibility that will go with the money. Even if he wanted to give it away it would be a task, I don't know what the tax laws are like in Germany but here in the good ole USofA no good action goes untaxed.

You're quite right, of course. I simply thought of taking the cheque to our friendly neighbourhood Credit Union, withdrawing what we needed for ourselves (to be mortgage free - aaah, a lovely dream!) and to be 'Santa' to so many - and then instructing the bank and a friendly tax lawyer to give away the remainder to a list of charities, pay all appropriate taxes and don't call me until it's all gone. Grin!
A 'friendly' we knew won a vast amount in a lottery ... it took less than 12 months for her to have no friends left (nope, they didn't ask her for money but she won't even share with her elderly mom who desperately had wanted a television for years, etc) and for her to have a complete 'mental breakdown'. Poor woman was a tad unstable to begin with but having this sudden wealth threw her right over the edge. |

Tis a sad story for sure, I wonder how long he's been a widower, possibly never gotten past grieving for her. how many times whould he have to think "if only she was here now" , might be kinda rough on ya. Maybe he has realized money can't buy happiness (but I'd still like to try

There really, probably is a whole other story there to uncover considering the age of the individual.
