Welsh legend Joe Calzaghe has beaten everyone who's been put in front of him. Now, with his domination of Roy Jones Junior, his legacy is complete.
I just hope he sticks to his decision to retire, and gets the credit he deserves for an incredible career. This post has been edited by KingOfIdiocy: Nov 10 2008, 01:51 AM |

Has to be one of the most popular boxers Britain has ever produced. Good old Joe!
And yes, let's hope he's not lured back into the ring. -------------------- Snana, the friendly Sioux. |

I don't think anybody who knows anything about boxing history will rate Joe with Ali. I don't even rate Calzaghe the best British boxer ever. I would say that's Lennox Lewis. I still don't think Joe gets the credit he deserves from fans outside the UK.

Yes, Lennox was good, but surely Triple World Champion Bob Fitzsimmons remains the best ever 'in their time' British boxer.
Undisputed Middle, (his true weight class), Light Heavy and Heavyweight World Champion. This post has been edited by The Colonel: Nov 10 2008, 04:40 PM -------------------- Snana, the friendly Sioux. |

Having only seen Bob Fitzsimmons on ancient, grainy film, I find it hard to make a judgement. Whether Bob was more dominant in his time, is of course, subjective. Boxing is the most subjective of sports, after all.
As for Fitzsimmons winning titles a three different weight classes, I think Lennox Lewis may have struggled to have made middleweight. |

Agree, and if Bob somehow could meet Lennox in the ring, both at their prime, Lennox would marmalise him. Although, if Fitzsimmons had modern training techniques, diet etc., who knows?
Whatever, Bob Fitzsimmons record remains far away ahead of any other British boxer to date. -------------------- Snana, the friendly Sioux. |

I have watched calzaghe from his early fights right up until his last,he has beaten everyone put in front of him.
He's beaten undeafeted up and comers like jeff lacey, mikel kessler e.t.c,to legends like roy jones, bernard hopkins, chris eubanks e.t.c. I am a huge boxing fan and to me calzaghe is in the top 5 of all time,i would like him to have one more fight and that would be against undefeated chad dawson, and to be honest i think he would beat him like he did on americas last great hope jeff lacy. It does'nt matter if he's british or not, calzaghe's legacy deserves respect. As for lennox lewis ,lewis was great in a division that was dying,he was put down and stopped ,calzaghe when put down got up and embarresed his opponents,to me that is the sign of a legend. At 36 years of age calzaghe outworks guys 10yrs younger,he proved saturday night that he can throw leather for twelve rounds, faster than anyone. To me calzaghe is that good. -------------------- god my head hurts

Calzaghe, one of the 5 greatest af all time? Wow. Lennox Lewis is another who doesn't get the respect that he deserves. Remember, Ali was only saved from defeat by Henry Cooper because of 'gamesmanship' from Angelo Dundee. Lewis got caught, and his brains were scrambled, (or discombobulated, to use the prefered boxing term), it happens.
As for Joe's age, different people peak at different ages. |

When i say my top five,i mean top of my generation,i dont count ali, robinson ,marciano e.t.c ,its impossible for me to watch there career from start to finish,so this may upset you guys, but it is my opinion for my timeline.in no particular order.
1) evander holyfield 2) mike tyson 3) joe calzaghe 4) oscar de la hoya 5) julio ceaser chavez 6) nigel benn 7) floyd mayweather 8) shane mosely 9) roy jones jnr 10) chris eubank Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons if tyson at his prime fought ali at his prime who would have won? I'd go tyson. -------------------- god my head hurts

Ali. The man was just amazingly intelligent, light on his feet and an incredibly good all round boxer. I placed Marciano top of my list because I believe he would have grinded Ali's rope-a-dope tactic to a halt. Rocky would have concentrated upon the 'Greatest's arms as he did in the famous bout against Walcott. There was never a more determined and gutsy fighter than Marciano, ever. Probably why he was unbeaten.
