Sorry for the belated reply. Been busy and quite tired. Lets see:I had a look for some books that would interest me, only to find they are all only available in German tongue.gif (Nachtzug n. Lissabon and Schatten des Windes). Any more suggestions?

Oops cross posting. On a side note - afaik only moderators can edit a post after 24 hrs.

Having read lightning on numerous occasion's i can honestly say that it is one of the best book's of that genre i have ever
read and i think it would be an excellent choice, for the thoughtvent book club.
Obviously everyone has diffrent taste's,but it is a damn good read thumbup2.gif

Let's choose something we can start at the beginning of January (if it works for everyone?). We can make it a New Years' Resolution! thumbup.gif

Hi All,

How about we start with Lightening and see how we go. Is everyone ok with beginning the 14th Jan??

I thought the 14th would be enough time for everyone to recover from Xmas and New Year whistling.gif

Give me a yahoo and let me know, otherwise if you don't hear from me before the 14th, I'll touch base then. (Gee, even I can't make sense of that?!)

Merry Xmas all and a happy New Year!

I need a drink..........

This sounds like a good first time book and January is fine with me as long as it's fine with to other members. One question though, is the book available in the library or still new enough to buy? I need to know where I can get a copy.

Just something I stumbled over while browsing amazon:

The Kite Runner
Everything is Illuminated

I realise they might be a bit hefty reads, but just thought I d mention them as I do think they sound pretty interesting.

Hi all - there have been some really good suggestions in this thread for a "communal read???" and I for one, not having read 'Lightning' have put it on my 'must read' list.... however, I have just re-read "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton (Andromea Strain/Jurassic Park etc) which is a) a really gripping read and cool.gif an even more interesting and (with lots of genuine scientific reports and references and a fabulous bilbiography) a most thought provoking study of the "Global Warming" debacle. which gives some powerful arguments to re-think you current attitude, whether yea or nay!! whistling.gif

Don't think this is just that, the story is a real page turner and combines mystery, mayhem, power politics etc.

I think this could be an interesting contender for a 'group' read and discussion .... any thoughts???? blink.gif

Well obviously it will be hard to get everyone's taste under one umbrella, but looking back at the books I found to suggest here and the book I was given by my friends mom yesterday, I dont think that Lightning is really something I am currently interested sad.gif (as you can see the suggested books all have some sort of current affair / history relation). There is still some time, so may be there are some other suggestions too.

Well, this book club was really successful. I think if the club are not able to meet in person, people will not feel obliged to read any chosen book. Nice idea in theory though.

Maybe a discussion could have been held about a book many people have already read.

Yes - it's hard to reach a consensus, but perhaps the titles actually posted will guide people to reading something new? F'rinstance, I recently was given the name of Paulo Coelho and one of his books "the Alchemist" (right away from my usual authors), but, having just started, it looks as though it will be an excellent read- it has sold over 20 million copies since it was first published in 1994.

This man has written about a dozen books and I'm looking forward to exploring them over time.

It's possible. It is hard to get people out of there comfort zone though.

Though I have found that a brief synopsis of the story/theme can spark some interest in readers who would not ordinarily view a "different" book just on title and author -works for me crazy.gif

I have only just realised that I don't read fast enough to be in a bookclub.
