The Gratitude Sign.

Ever wonder how to say thank you when you see a military person in uniform if you ever see one?

See a simple way to do it from across a room or as you are passing by.

Also approriate to use with many others.

Interesting, and a good idea.

However, the American Sign Language sign for "gratitude" is: ASL - "gratitude".

I wonder if someone proficient in signing can provide some guidance on this?

Yes the sign being shown in my link is considered a slang form of Thank You, and only requires using one hand.
Starting from the heart and pointing towards the individual makes it very easy for most all to understand even if they don't know any signing.

The piece might have been better titled "How to say Thank You to a Service Person."

The link was sent to me by an individual who taught me to sign long ago. Just another language I chose to learn.

Never knew of these gestures.Learning something new every day.
Personally,of the two gestures,I think C's link is far more acceptable to someone in Uniform. thumbup2.gif
The second link, you could read a number of things, by that gesture. Just my thoughts.
EDIT.
Another thing, walking down the street, often one is carrying shopping in one hand,so see useing a two hand Gesture, would be difficult at times.

Ah, OK. I agree, it's easier and simpler, yet certainly is understandable.

Just wondering where it came from.

Yes, looking through the ASL site, a lot of the "signing" makes sense once you see it and think about it.

In any event, this is a great idea.

Thanks for the link.

Yes, it could catch on and is a wonderful idea.

One would have to be careful where it was used, for I have seen both gestures used in foreign climes. I have seen Arabs use the single handed gesture and although I do not know the meaning, I do believe it is also positive. This may not be the case elsewhere and an airport could possibly be the worst place to use it.

I say again though, (before I am flamed, which is the trend here lately), that it is a great idea.

Cool!, Very! smile.gif I received this as a e-mail as well (I should check my mail more often )

Now on a side note, if you want to download the vid (27.1 mb short, 199.6 mb long ), does it strike anybody else as odd that it's listed as a Quick time movie but when I do a "save as" it shows and downloads as a windows executable (.exe) file ?

Possibly it is a self-extracting compressed file.

One of my many talents includes restoring vintage radio. Whilst talking to a similarly talented colleague at work recently, regarding valve,[U.S. =tube], values and equivalence idea.gif , we brought many accusations of 'anorakism', [U.S.=geekiness].

Here, I am happy to say, I do not understand what on earth you are talking about! wacko.gif

Thanks "C",
I saw in the link you provided the original sign with one hand starting from your heart is being the prefered method for a civilian to say thanks to a uniformed soldier.

Funny how I have always given a half salute to my bretheren when they are in uniform and I am not.
Must be some sort of cosmic link.LOL

Interesting how even sign language has changed over the centuries.

Thanks again, as I will be using this in the future.

I should restate this sign applies to any in service, wherever. A Fire Fighter, A Police Officer, Nurse, etc.

Shall we make it a universal thank you sign?

If any should chose to learn more.... http://www.aslpro.com/cgi-bin/aslpro/aslpro.cgi
