Sad Story

Anyone had any experience, or know someone that has, with this? The welfare of people that answered the call of this country to serve is obviously less important than the almighty dollar. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

It's not just purely wrong, it's criminal behavior.

I know of a couple NG/Reservists who suffered similar treatment after the first Gulf War.
The old boys network managed to help this few and find them much better employment - careers actually.

This is not an advertisement for the Company noted in this story.
Just to note that some corporations go the extra mile for their employees called away to serve.

"one of the employers who take additional steps to show support for employees involved in serving their country (either in the Reserves or the National Guard) by guaranteeing the continuance of their civilian pay (for up to 60 months) and allowing continued participation in life insurance, medical and dental programs."

I received an email noting this story. Not only did they provide the Urban Legends link, they went so far as to contact a corporate representative for more information. The Rep confirmed the facts and I quote them in part:
"..... regards service to our country as one of greatest sacrifices our young men and women can make. We are happy to do our part to lessen the burden they bear at this time."

I simply say vote with your $$$ at the businesses that support our Troops and their famlies, and avoid like a plague the others who do not.

From what I remember, it's the law (has it changed ?) that they have to give you your job back when returning from Military service.

The Laws have not changed.
Just the enforcement of such has changed!

Our country is fast sinking from the heights that we once enjoyed as the leader of the free world. We are no longer the leader of the free world but we are the BULLY'S. Our present leadership thinks it can open its big collective mouth and tell other countrtys how they will do things. Meanwhile the leadership of our nation is also trying to tear down the present fabric of our own society just to line the pockets of a few, and not just on a national level but on a worldwide level.
We are supossed to be a society of equals but we have turned into a society of the privliged for the privliged and by the privliged. In other words if you don't belong to the country club swet you are a worm.

In my work place we have all the National and State work laws posted up for all employees to view, and it explicitly states that it is against the law to withold or fire a person from their job because of Military/national obligations and that when the person comes back full pay must be reinstated and the job position must be reinstated for the person.

Because you asked if anyone had any experience with this, here's my two cents.

After my tour of duty, and some physical rehabilitation, I decided on a career path that I always wanted as a kid.
I went to college for two years to study fire science.
I went for ride along programs with a number of different fire departments while attending school.
I passed the written exams for three fire departments with scores above 95%
I was turned down by all three fire departments because they said I couldn't pass the physical, but I preformed all the tasks they tested me on such as: pulling 100 feet of three inch hose one hundred yards. coupling and uncoupling hose connections, raising the forty foot ladder, climbing the ladder and bringing down a 150lb dummy, and all the other parts of the dexterity tests the fire departmnets use.
Yeah I had a part of my hip blown up, but it doesn't affect my ability to run ( 100 yards in about 13.5)
Yep my shoulder has a big ole scar and a pin in it but I can bench 175.
And my left hand has a plastic joint instead of a knuckle for my middle finger, but I can still flip you the bird, and I' sure you wouldn't want to get caught by my left jab.

So I faced the fact that I wasn't going to get to be a firefighter.
But wait!!!

I applied for a job at Detroit Edison as an electrician apprentice. But they said I was too much of an insurance risk.

I had buddies who experienced the same type of rejection and they had no-wounds.

Course now there were the guys who dad's were in supervisory postions at different corporations who had no-such problems after serving.

And don't forget all the hippie draft deferment guys, with thier diplomas.

Then there were the guys like G.W.Bush who daddy had all the right political connections, and look at the good jobs he got!
Heck he ran eight different companies into the ground and somebody still elected him president!

It has been my experience that no-matter the subject or situation life hands you, no-one gives a
sh-- unless it effects them personally. And when the same thing happens to enough people then someone will finally get up off their duffs and do something about it.
But the majority of the people in the world are just out to get thiers, and they don't care what happens to the next guy.
