Making a comeback after nearly a 100 year ban in the USA,is Absinthe. The almost mythical but intense spirit with it's ghostly green color is being legalized once again. Absinthe was banned for it's high content of the chemical thujone. A chemical produced from its levels of wormwood. It is also infused with powerful herbal stimulants, creating a brain battle in the imbiber. Alcohol a depresant mixed with stimulants. Henri-Louis Pernod's original absinthe recipe included green anise, fennel, angelica, hyssop and wormwood. To give absinthe a green hue,Chlorophyll was added.

The thujone in it could induce hallucinations and a drug-like state. It's imbibing was thought to be the source of Van Gogh's impulse to cut off his ear. Emile Zola mentioned it in a novel and Ernest Hemingway said: ``Got tight last night on absinthe. Did knife tricks.''
Well two brands have pssed the government standard of "thujone free." It is 10 parts per million. The compamies are Swiss Absinthe Superieure Kubler,106 proof and Lucid, Absinthe Superieure, 124 proof. It is catching on intrendy restaurants and bars, not sure if that is a good thing or not. A bottle is priced $50 - 80 USD
There is further information on the beverage here...

BTW for those of you who were not aware the "sale" of Absinthe was/is prohibited in the U.S.A. however one could purchase outside of the country and bring it in (i want to say the max for personal consumption is 2 5ths, at least thats what the legal amount for moonshine is) and possess it. This is mearly the US trying to recoup the lost tax dollars it is losing through Internet sales IMHO.

Yes only recently has it been legalized`in most of western Europe. But now you can buy it here in the USA. There are several ways to serve it. Most common is to let it trickle through sugar cubes into a glass.

I have never tried Absinthe (yet), also known as "The Green Fairy", but is said to taste similar to Ouzo (which I have had , and more than enough of thank you ) . Seems to be popular in Gothic style horror movies, as in "From Hell" and "Dracula" (1992 version) Wikipedia has a decent page on it. the History Channel gave it ten minutes during "the History of Hard Stuff" (or what ever it was called laugh.gif) Give me a Guinness any day.

As a lad I was given Absinthe to cure a very bad hangover caused by a little to much whiskey - It did not work or help, well I suppose if you count instant vomitting as a cure then may be it did.

Never ever again axesmiley.png
