I'm not a true gamer, but I do enjoy messing around with a PC game now and then.

Now, nobody laugh, but I finally got around to downloading the Halo: Combat Evolved (for PC) demo and now I know a bit of what all the fuss is about.

Like other First Person Shooters I've played - Doom, Quake, Half-Life - it is immersive as you familiarize yourself with the surroundings. What I've found, though, is once I got used to the keyboard controls, it is fun. I suppose that's the bottom line to any of these, not whether it is challenging or different, but whether it is enjoyable, and I'd say Halo CE, at least the demo, certainly is.

Now I realize I did this just in time, because we are starting to see Halo 3 ads on TV and in the theaters. I'd be clueless while watching them. As it is, I'm only somewhat clued in since I haven't played the full Halo games, but at least I have an idea.

Anyone else seen the TV or theater ads?

What do you think of them?

In my humble opinion:

Halo CE: great game. immersive and intense game play with probably the best game engine of that time period.

Halo 2: mediocre game that needed a new plot and game engine. It was a remix of Halo CE

Halo 3: I'm not holding my breath about any Bungee or M$ software title being good.

I play Halo CE and Halo 2 (on PC) often, and it one of the most fun games i've played. Halo CE is the best though, playing on chaosgulch (the player-made map) is perfect for whenever i'm feeling stressed and need to release some pent up anger smile.gif. The greatest part of Halo CE, as mentioned, is the player maps and all teh crazy things on the maps. If you go to HaloMaps.org you can download some of the more popular maps. Another great thing with Halo CE, is that online multiplayer is free. Same for Halo 2 (though in halo 2, you have the option to get a Gold LIVE membership). If you really start to get into, get Xfire (from Xfire.com) and register (also free), and friend me, and we can play matches together, if you want of course. Realize though, in the demo, you can only play one map (blood gulch). Once you break free of that and buy it (which its rather cheap now being its been out so long and halo 3 is literaly a week away) you'll be introduced into a whole new universe (no pun intended) of game play. And the campaign plot is pretty awesome, too.

Overall, if your thinking about buying it, it's worth it.

Regards,
TheYoda

EDIT: I realized that when you say Halo CE, you mean combat evolved, I'm thinking halo CE, halo custom edition, which is the best part of Halo 1 (as i like to call it lol)

Halo was and still is a great game, IMO the first one was way better. I've never played it for the PC though, I have the first and second on the XBOX, and I personally thought Halo2 sucked. What are the system requirements for the first one? I'd be willing to download and try if it worked on my puter then we could all game up and kick some alien butt biggrin.gif

That's a good question.

I just downloaded it from h e r e, installed it, and it worked.

All I can find is:

Windows 98/Me/2000/XP, DirectX 9 drivers

I didn't like Halo 1 or Halo 2, never seen what all the fuss is about. In my opinion, Half-Life's single player was better, and Unreal Tournament's and Timesplitter's multi-player was better.

Halo 3 was released last night - Halo 3 review: Third time's the charm -Halo 3 is arguably the finest video game that has been released this year, writes Nick Cowen

I suspect that before the day is out, there will already be walkthroughs and cheats on the Net.

Of course, if you are one of us that don't have an Xbox 360, we can't let the fun begin.

Edit to add:

The Halo 3: ending spoilers are already on the Net!

I think it's sad that FPS games have made the mainstream. I've seen Halo being played, and I see very little originality or intrigue that isn't anything more than a gory marketing strategy. When Halo 3 got released a day or two or whenever ago, there were people that were absent just because they wanted to play the dang thing.

The one FPS game I have ever enjoyed would be The Ship, but sadly the multiplayer servers in the US are sparsely populated anymore.
