This is a nice topic Doug.

Pets can be a large part of our lives. Unfortunately I can't have a pet where I live at the moment, but I salvaged a bitsa spaniel many years ago when I lived in a different part of the country, and he was a big part of my life for a very long time. He brought up all of my kids. LOL.

We were living out in the country when he just disappeared one day. He was very old and crippled so I figure his time had just come. I hunted around for days in case his collar had become caught in a fence, but nary a sign was found.

Great memories though.

Max is so incredibly beautiful, DSTM, truly he is and what a joy he must have been for you! My heart is sad for both you and for our Rowal for the loss of your precious furry friends.

Peggy was, without doubt, my very best friend. She was a golden red cocker spaniel mix and loved me as much as I loved her. Although sleeping on my bed was a no-no, I'd open the window each night and somehow 'magically' she would pop through (my Father was doing the 'magic' by boosting her through each night right after I got tucked-in! Grin!).

When she was hit by a car and killed, I was 11 and I thought my heart would break.

Each time one says to oneself, "we will be together for only a short time, so I won't get too attached." And each time the growth of trust and love makes their deaths hard to bear. But each has a special place in my heart, and when I see a similar dog, I have really happy memories.

This is Pumpkin. She was 13 years old when she died, almost two years ago. I still miss my dear, sweet kitty. There was, and will never be, another cat like her.

What a darling wee kitty, no wonder you miss Pumpkin!

So very right - each time we say the very same thing and yet they capture a huge part of our hearts in no time, Zarathustra.

Fine Pictures and thanks for sharing them and the memories.

---------------------------------------

I don't have pictures to share with you all. (I'm no longer allowed to have or use a camera. That's another story for another time.)

But, My family and I were Great Dane rescuers for many years.
We had eight over about 16 years.
Some were trained by a family friend as Dogs of War (DOWs) = defenders.
(I'll discuss Great Danes in another post?)

But the canine I'll talk about now was a Toller Retriever.
Came to our rural home as a 6-8 month old pup? Abanoned, thrown out, or who knows what?

I thought she was a fox cub at first, caught on our back porch area looking for food. Except she was very docile. She came to me almost immediately.

It took me two years, many Vets visits, and consults to track her breed down.

We all love our Canine friends. Most are very smart also. They read us well.

This dog - I named: "Putz" - she was named such as she was soo nutty. Herded up the 3 DOWs I had at the time.
I could send Putz to bring back any of the DOWs and she always got it right. I could send Putz to check on the elder neighbor next door (1/8 mile away) and she would round him up too.

Toller Retievers are actually bred as water fowl hunters. Very expensive breed.
I don't know why this pup was thrown out.

She knew when I was ill and would lay at my feet.
She'd lay at my back door while I was gone, until I returned home.
Sometimes I was away 48 hours or more. Family couldn't move her otherwise.

She told me when my Daughter's cat passed also. Tho' that cat had hidden away to die.
(Another story for another post.)

She talked also, simple grunts - telling me it was time to get all fed were I late in doing such.
Or when they all needed outside time.
I never had to "house break" her either.

Putz was my mistress/"2nd" wife... ha ha

I miss Putz a lot to this day. Fine canine she was.

//Others know I have some kind of thing with canines - that's another story for another time also.//

If I ever get a working scanner again here, I'll put up some pictures.

//Edit: Where I live now, I cannot have any pets, animals, or mistresses... ha ha ha

Conundrum, your Putz sounds like such an intelligent creature and it doesn't surprise me - I honestly believe animals are far more intelligent that most give them credit for.

Do hope you'll start a thread about why you are 'not allowed' to use a camera anymore - huge gentle laugh!

And hope you get your scanner working again - would love to see the photos.

We lost out Labrador 3 years ago and it was like losing a child
She had been with us since she was 8 weeks old
She had become a valued member of the family
It was the only time i have seen my husband cry when she had to be put to sleep
13 years of memories
Again a ohoto when i can wade through Photobucket

I will have to get a picture up, our cat, such a friendly thing and so healthy well he just up and walked away after we got back from vacation. I wish he would come back home and he may but he could be dead. Until we know though he will be thought of as alive for at least the next 10 years ha ha.

think of me as cold hearted. I've had 12 beagle dogs (not including the current one Boone) yet for the life of me I can only remember 3) Princess(the mother), 2)Bashful (The father), 3)Butch (the son, had 9 brothers and sisters). Also had 1 Aussie Shepard (Pete, real creative name huh?) a golden retriever (Sammy, put down 2 years ago by the county), about 20 different barn kittens that never lasted more than 5 months a peice, a couple calfs that turned from pets to dinners, and a few Mutts (one was aptly named Mutt, yet again we aren't a creative group). BTW why did I say what i said at the beginning, well y'all have seen "Old Yeller" I don't need to paint that picture again it was a fact of life where I grew up.

Even I miss Conundrum's Putz.

I had a pretty cool cat for a time. I didn't have him long as he was a stray. He just disappeared one day and never came back. I don't know what happened to him. He was great fun and a very vocal cat with his growling and yowling all the time. At this time I do not have any pets of my own although they are allowed at my apartment complex. I just do not have time now for one. When I need a canine fix I head over to my niece's apartment across the way and see DeeDee and Dexter.

This is Jasper - he died in 1997, three months before his third birthday. He was always a night owl so I wasn't too perturbed when he was nowhere to be seen one morning - then the Milkman brought him home, he'd found him down the road. I still miss him dreadfully, we had the best cuddles. He was half Burmese and had the sweetest temperament - until he found a frog to torment laugh.gif

We live on a main road now so I daren't have another.

Our first cat, was hit by a car.. Don't remember the year, maybe six years ago or more. Then we had another cat who was with us for about 2 years but then again wasn't really that much of a company, and walked away -- don't know where. Might have died or found another place. smile.gif I don't have any pics of her uploaded on the net but I'll see if I find something on the laptop..

[EDIT]Don't know why the images aren't showing up.... Will upload to my photobucket account.[/EDIT]

Aaaah, too adorable!! Thanks so much for sharing the photos with us, Rawe.

Phantom65, your Jasper looks like a beautiful miniature version of a black panther - you wonder you miss him. Gentle sigh.

This may seem odd, Pandora, but I've always felt that when we take in a stray and they adopt us - for whatever period of time - even when they wander off again, never to return, we've at least given each other some happy time. Must admit that I too become ever so sad when they leave and spend endless amounts of time trying convince myself they've merely wandered off to a happier home. And I hope that this is what has happened to your kitty, CGM - know it wasn't a stray but I'm truly sorry and hope he comes home soon.

And you made me smile with your words that we could call you, "cold hearted", BlackSpyder, because I'd never believe it in a moment! Rather, I just think of it as reality - some furry friends are intended to be our friends and some are 'just passing through', such as baby calves and bunnies, etc, puppies found in a ditch and endless kittens and puppies rescued from the drowning barrel and hidden away in the hayloft, in my case.
