Shhhh! Cities ask bikers to muffle their motorcycles

By: EMILY FREDRIX - Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- Cities from New York to Denver are giving motorcyclists the silent treatment.

...And that worries riders rights groups, which fear that a wave of ordinances aimed at muffling Harley-Davidsons, hushing Hondas and stifling Suzukis will create a confusing patchwork of laws that motorcyclists won't be able to navigate....

--As of July 1, riders in New York City are subject to a minimum $440 fine for having a muffler or exhaust system that can be heard within 200 feet.

--In Lancaster, Pa., starting this month riders -- and all motor vehicle drivers -- could be ticketed for drawing attention to themselves, whether by creating too much noise by revving their engines or doing hard accelerations. Tickets start at $150.

--As of July 1, motorcyclists in Denver could be ticketed $500 for putting mufflers on their bikes made by someone other than the original manufacturer, if the bike is 25 years old or less.....

No yelling now, please ... but I'm all for it! Yup, when they are loud enough to make babies start screaming and setting off car alarms it seems like large doses of 'noise pollution' to me. (Don't think anyone minds a 'quiet rumble' but that's a vastly different thing).

I don't know about you, but i love the low rumble of a classic harley, but i LOATHE the new spoty motorcycles that have that fast, high-pitched whine. It makes me wanna punch small children...

Laughing, but kindly, Yoda!

Do agree it would be a shame if the big bikes couldn't have their low-pitch rumble any more - after all, I think perhaps that's part of the romance of having one of them.

But what surprises me is a bike is classified as a motor vehicle, at least in our Province, and ones like those I mentioned earlier shouldn't need special laws, just ticket them! But oddly enough, our local Police don't .... hmmm.

Secondary noise is harmful to the eardrums.
Put four or more cycles together going down a city street or a country road, and they are deafening.

Motorcycles should have the same noise ordinances applied to them as any other motor vehicle. I find it ludicrous that I can't mow my yard before seven in the morning without being cited yet a bike with straight pipes can blast through without any worries anytime of day.

You all think one is bad you should go to Bike week in a big city near you. We went to one in Myrtle Beach SC and it was great but very loud. The roads were solid with bikes! A neat experience for sure. I like the noise myself but not when it gets to loud like with a straight pipe. That is just annoying.

If it improves performance and mileage, please leave me alone!
I can't afford the gas prices in my P.O.S. dodge shadow.
