And I firmly believed that until I was 17 and married! wacko.gif

But I seem to have forgotten scads of my biology (interesting how when I studied it in school there was literally no chapter on 'making babies' - huge laugh!) ... but can some one refresh my memory how it is a green eyed mother and a blue eyed father end up with a brown eyed baby? (And nope, as far back as we could trace our ancestry, we've all been green or blue eyed apparently).

I don't know how to say this, but is there anything else you've forgotten. sad.gif

Eye Color to Determine Paternity

Eye Color Calculator

Kidding with you as we don't have a truly iron clad system yet. Probability is less but not impossible, especially in your case.
: An individual can thus have two copies of the gene with the same flavor (brown-brown), or two copies of different flavors (brown-blue). Human eye color is controlled by at least three genes, though we only understand two of them well.
Note that this two gene model does not explain most human eye color inheritance. We know that there are black eyes, grey eyes, hazel eyes, and differing shades of brown, blue, and green eyes that are not explained by these two genes. Human eye color inheritance is a complicated polygenic system than we are pretending in this simplified two gene example.

QUOTE
In humans three genes involved in eye color are known. They explain typical patterns of inheritance of brown, green, and blue eye colors. However, they don't explain everything. Grey eye color, Hazel eye color, and multiple shades of blue, brown, green, and grey are not explained. The molecular basis of these genes is not known. What proteins they produce and how these proteins produce eye color is not known. Eye color at birth is often blue, and later turns to a darker color. Why eye color can change over time is not known. An additional gene for green is also postulated, and there are reports of blue eyed parents producing brown eyed children (which the three known genes can't easily explain [mutations, modifier genes that supress brown, and additional brown genes are all potential explanations]).

Perhaps this directly relates to the "filter" effect

caused by one's belly button lint?

The eye color is a result of the production of different pigments controlled by a few genes. How many exactly remains unknown. But the actual pigment production is also affected by the chemical enviorment, so what you eat, the pollutions you you encounter and diseases can all have an effect on eye color.

Also, there is melanin in the eye (melanin is what gives you a tan in the sun). So your eye color changes based on your exposure to the sun.

We had several chapters on the making of babies in biology, which we sat giggling endlessly about.

Yes, I'm totally serious! And the worse part of it, I was told that by my best friend who was two years older than I was - drat! I think the term for it is 'bone ignorant' as although we studied biology in school there wasn't a single thing of the 'sexual' nature mentioned so anything I thought I knew came from friends who were just as dumb as I was - gentle grin.

And thanks for the explanations re brown eyed babies arriving unexpectedly - glad to see the understanding of it has progressed since I studied that stuff!

My parents are both blue eyed, so are my sisters, but I have brown eyes. My dad's mom had brown eyes. Probably that's where it's coming from smile.gif

I thought the same. It wasn't until my 2nd year biology course in my senior year in high school that I got straightened out.
