The first recognisable e-mail marketing message was sent on 3 May, 1978 by Gary Thuerk to 400 lucky people on behalf of DEC (a computer company) via Arpanet, the Internet's forerunner.

In 1991 ,The name of Spam was given to unsolicited E-mail by Joel Furr, an Usenet administrator, who reputedly got his inspiration for the name from a Monty Python sketch set in a restaurant where the menu featured the processed meat in various dishes. The sketch ends with everyone, led by a group of chanting Vikings, shouting in unison: "Spam. Spam. Spam. Spam. Spam."
