From the article:
QUOTE
The biofuel madness is gathering steam, and it’s not good news for the world’s poor and hungry. Putting one man’s dinner into another man’s car hardly seems like a sensible or ethical way of solving any of the world’s problems.
--Graham Young, 2 August 2006

These are serious problems, but they miss the saddest most devastating point of all. There is absolutely no need for biofuels and especially ethanol to stop global warming or climate change--the main reason for their introduction.

never understood the whole corn to make fuel deal. Soy has a higher energy rating per bushel, more bushels per acre, and isnt a dietary staple.

I want to go to a diesel on my next vehicle as corn based ethanol is a stupid idea for for mass production, if all the farmland in the US was grown for bio-fuel exclusively, it would meet 15% of our needs if IIRC. plus you need to burn 2 gallons alcohol to get the same power as 1 gallon gasoline.
Rapeseed Oil (canola is a type of rapeseed) is the best for making bio-diesel as it produces more oil per acre than even soy. But unless more land and new technology comes about to increase production levels possibly by new extraction methods I don't think it will be enough any time soon

I don't know about the energy yield but as far as agricultural production goes, corn yields significantly more bushels per acre than soybeans. I think most people would be surprised at how much soy oil and meal that they consume in their diets.

Rutabagas - I have yet to meet anyone who would eat these, so they are a biofuel that will not compete with our food supply

Ethanol and Biodiesel Producers turn to Rutabagas as feedstock

While bio-fuels may bring us some relief to being so dependant on oil, I feel that is is only a stop-gap measure to the way we will create the energy we need in the future.
Right now no-one wants to bite the bullet by giving up their big gas guzzling SUV's, and the 0 to 60 in under five seconds vehicles.
I still believe that greed is stalling the technology of the future from being in use today, and we all need to rethink what is right for all, and not just for our pocket books!
