"This is licensed work which has been carefully evaluated. This is a process in a dish, and we are dealing with a clump of cells which would never go on to develop. It's a laboratory process and these embryos would never be implanted into anyone.
________________________________________________________________________________ _____ What happens when some nutcase suddenly decides it would be fun to play Dr. Frankenstein?? This type of process could very well have positive results when it comes to helping people with diseases that are otherwise devastating but they are also risky. An experiment or project of this type leaves the door wide open for what could be some horrific out comes in the wrong hands and things like this seem to have a tendency of finding their way into the wrong hands eventually. On a personal level I find this type of process to be repugnent and don't think it should be allowed to continue as, esp. as long as it involves the crossing of human and animal DNA. -------------------- Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.~~

That particular article didn't exactly describe the proceedure.
The cow egg is first emptied of it's nucleous along with the cows DNA. Then the human DNA is injected back into it's host's egg in order for the cells to divide and multiply long enough to extract these stem cells. These are then used for various scientific purposes as finding cures for many diseases and even to regenerate human organs. While it may conjure up frankenstien visions. This is all but impossible as the human egg nucleous is not used to grow these stem cells. It's only the DNA that is being used to form stem cells, and stem cells do not make babies. What is really providing us with the hope. Is with this ability we will have the chance to save lives. We have now so far to been able to use the stem cells to grow a human bladder thus giving patients with cancer of the bladder a chance of donating some of their own bladder cells to be combined with stem cells resulting in a perfect match to their own DNA. This in turns gives them almost 99.99% garuntee of not rejecting the newly formed bladder implant. Right now the people of the world may not be real comfortable with this new technology, but I'm pretty sure the benefits to mankind will make a huge difference when it gets perfected enough to correct children born with deffects. What parent would let their child die because they were born with deformations. Or what if science can utilize stemcells from a child with autism to have parts of their brains to be grown in a labratory and then implanted back into the child to correct autism. How about a kid who fell from some playground equipment and ruptured both of their kidneys and their spleen? Just remove some of the tissue and the regrow these organs in a labratory, then save your child. Children who have been severly burned. Instead of skin grafts from other areas of their bodies which when placed over burnt skin, this still leaves horrible and disfiguring scars. They could now have complete recovering of skin that belongs in the area that was first burnt. This skin can be grown right on the very portion of the body that was affected. Remember that when our children become disabled from many childhood diseases they can loose internal organs, and then they must wait for another child to die in many many cases in order to receive a transplant. And mind you that even if one child gets a transplant from a sibbling, there is still a big chance that the transplant will be rejected, and now two chidren could die. At first glance this technology may seem scarey, but I think that you will see in the future just how great having this ability will be! There is no right or wrong in the world... only what is deemed as the standard of ethics.
I personally support it. I always find science the most interesting subject at school only second to math. If we aren't innovative like that we'd still be eating fungi in caves. This post has been edited by SkyFuser: Apr 23 2008, 01:57 AM |

There is the time where you have to say: I know we can, but should we. All factors of the possible outcomes have to be taken into consideration.
