QUOTE
One would think that countries that committed to the Kyoto treaty are doing a better job of curtailing carbon emissions. One would also think that the United States, the only country that does not even intend to ratify, keeps on emitting carbon dioxide at growth levels much higher than those who signed.

And one would be wrong.

The Kyoto treaty was agreed upon in late 1997 and countries started signing and ratifying it in 1998. A list of countries and their carbon dioxide emissions due to consumption of fossil fuels is available from the U.S. government. If we look at that data and compare 2004 (latest year for which data is available) to 1997 (last year before the Kyoto treaty was signed), we find the following.

Emissions worldwide increased 18.0%.
Emissions from countries that signed the treaty increased 21.1%.
Emissions from non-signers increased 10.0%.
Emissions from the U.S. increased 6.6%.

Yet so many people keep saying that Bush is evil because he doesn't care about the world and won't sign the protocol.

Wow, just shows how the media can distort things. The BBC are always harping on about the U.S. not signing.

I've never disliked George Bush and feel that it has simply become trendy to deride him, and maybe the media has just nudged this along a little.

Interestingly, Britain is making some positive steps towards cutting emissions, as opposed to having any percentage increase. Hilary Benn, the Minister responsible, is working towards increasing the number of wind turbines and possibly harnessing wave power along our coastline. Whilst I would agree more could be done in certain areas, and although I am not a socialist [Labour] myself, I do applaud this stance and hope that it is continued by successive British Governments.

Yep, the BBC is no less distorted and biased than most of the US's main stream media.

I am sorry, but I do not agree on you entirely here. For one, there is only one link to base the findings on (which was also only listen upon reader request) and for two, "Traue keiner Statistik, die Du nicht selbst gefälscht hast" and last but not least, for thre: the figures end in 2004. Thus nothing really of "value" to me. Sorry just MHO whistling.gif

No problem. At the end of the article is the link to "the table showing increases in absolute numbers, not percentages" that you describe.

If you have links to newer or differring data, it would be helpful if you provided it/them.

I've seen a number of articles expressing a similar concept that the US has done better limiting it's emission levels than many of the countries that signed the Kyoto treaty - this is just one of them.

To me, there is not much "value" with people who say "do this" when they are doing something quite the opposite themselves. (Re: Al Gore and his high carbon footprint house.)
