Should there be a law to prevent discrimination against the rich, by this I mean laws to prevent providers of services and products from charging wealthy individuals or businesses above and beyond the standard price of such items or services.

I find that discriminatory acts such as these are prevalent within corporate/commercial legal practices, no?

If you could provide examples of such discrimination, these might clarify what you mean. Would that Zarathustra had to contend with such discrimination!

I've noticed that no matter who you are or what your background is, there will always be some form of discrimination.

Obviously, some people have it much harsher than others, but in the end, everyone is effected. I'm not really sure how this contributes exactly to this post, but I just felt like I needed to put that out there.

Just an observation.

Moreover, there are several types of discrimination. There is, for example, informal (in the sense of "personal") discrimination, and there is formal (in the sense of social or legal) discrimination. As Sphinx says, there is always discrimination, some of which might better be described as personal matters of taste, and more organized forms (we all understand the irrational and extreme cases of this and call it bigotry).

The great Manchester United are discriminated against. They are charged more than most other clubs for transfers simply because of who they are.

Ahhh....the poor old rich, (not the best metaphor!), how sorry we must all feel.

If two very recent examples are to go by I can confirm that in Britain, it is still the poor folk that suffer.

Take a British Bank that trades well for donkey's years, it's investors making hand over fist without a whisper. Then 'Poof!', it implodes with scenes of plaid jackets and corduroy queuing for hundreds of yards, waiting for tens of hours to withdraw their precious cash from it's many outlets. But then a fairy Godmother government waves it's magic wand, 'Poof!' Billions of pounds of taxpayers money is poured in to nationalise and bail out the bank for the fat cats.

Then take a humble Christmas Club that runs into debt just before......., (surprise, surprise), Christmas! It leaves thousands of poor folk around Britain with absolutely nothing for Christmas after they'd scrimped twenty quid a month into a pot. The government makes nice 'ahhhing' noises and feels sorry for those folk....does it put it's hand in the magic pot and draw out a couple of million quid.........does it heck's'like!

Luckily I am comfortable, not rich, not poor. Indeed I am staunch Conservative. But I have never ever been greedy and grasping like those who believe they are owed automatic profit by some magic 'giftie' at zero risk. Unfortunately there are so many of this ilk in Britain today, that we find ourselves governed by such ilk. They clearly believe it's a God given right that rich investors cannot lose.

I truly pity the poverty stricken of this country. No less than 2 million children living in poverty in such a wealthy land. It is rather more galling when billions of pounds leave the country for the poverty stricken overseas. Let's get poverty banished here first, it won't take long before we can help others.

But to think the rich are being encumbered with being overcharged is ridiculous, when such a difference in attitude is displayed by those entrusted with the welfare of all citizens.

I think if I own a product I should be allowed to sell it at any price I want. Thus if I want to sell my product to person A for $5 because he is poor and will only sell my product to person B for $50 because I consider him rich there should be no law preventing me from doing so. I should also be allowed to refuse to sell my product at all to person C because he is black, Jewish, a Muslim, has green eyes, or because I do not like the way that persons looks, or because I think that person is a jerk.

Topic: The American Republic in Crisis

Good Day ThoughtVent Community,

The peoples’ government is run by Lords, whose employee’s masquerade as our Senators and Congress people.

Example:

We have Goldman Sachs on the Left - Secretary Treasury Rubin, of the Clinton Administration the implementer of the de-regulation plan approved by Congress led by then Senator Phil Graham. (A qualifier I hold Mr. Rubin in high regard, I believe him to be a brilliant man, but, like all brilliant minds they can be tasked for great good or great harm)

We have Goldman Sachs on the Right - current Secretary Treasury Paulson demanding a 1/3rd of the American taxes and other revenue be turned over to him to manage as he sees fit now and for at least the first two years of the next administration.

Today on the Senate floor I heard one employee – Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky, state; Paulson/Administrations plan is the only concrete plan, its urgent! Yet another employee – Democratic Leader Harry Reid, Nevada stated; he ‘wishes’ that we pay for things, but that’s not how things are done around here. While Federal Reserve Commissioner Bernacke just gave the green light for Goldman Sachs to change its charter from an Investment Bank to Commercial Bank.

Goldman Sachs is currently one of the largest Global Investment Bank Franchises. So now that a vehicle is being designed which will allow the purchase of de-valued assets lost to over-leveraging or just stock manipulators driving down stock prices in any case ripe for the pickings for partners and associates showing up for the auctioning off of the American Dream. All that remains is that the Americans in the Ownership Society continue being Ostriches and the greedy, vain, and spineless remain so, long enough to get it signed by the President.

While we are all reeling over the real and imagined implications on our day to day life, the stage is being set for the October Surprise, President Bush’s soul-mate Prime Minister Putin has two carriers en-route to Venezuela to do training exercises – Do you think another Cuban Missile Crisis type scenario is in the making? Is it creditable or just another manipulation from the group of Twenty as they call themselves? (Yes it is cynical)

Respectfully,
Jo4Peace
