I believe 90 percent of the people in the United States just take up space before leaving this world. A life without service amounts to no more than a miserable, unrewarding existence.

Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.
-The Buddha By spirituality, the Buddha did not mean religion. In fact, until his death, his insights were not considered part of a new religion, but rather a teaching. It was his disciples that made it a religion, just as with Jesus and Christianity. Buddha never spoke of a God or an afterlife. His purpose was to offer the world a more effective and peaceful way of living this life – in the here and now. So I believe spirituality is something that shouldn’t be defined as one concept that works for everyone. As individuals, we need to first find, then experience our own spirituality. And I am convinced the place to find it is in our hearts.

Hi! I have just arrived at this board a few days back and this is my very first post. There seems to be a tremendous amount of diversity -- both with topic selection and demographics.
I am a 55-year old retired political journalist and yoga teacher. I currently live in Southeast Florida (The Bluest region of a clearly-defined Red State). I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I Served in the Navy during the Vietnam War era and used my GI benefits to attend college in Georgia. There's nothing more I love than an intelligent political discussion with contrasting ideologies. I find although I tend to lean to the Left, I still have learned a great deal from the Right during the years I lived in the South. I look forward to reading your posts and responding to as many as possible. |
