We didn't manage to get the garden in this year because Dad got sick, though we got some leeks and sweet potatoes planted in boxes. (Perhaps that's just as well since our freezer died and we're STILL awaiting the new one. It's been a month now). So, we're busy tilling and fencing the garden area now to get it ready for spring. We've got lovely fall weather now. At least I won't have to buy seed next year - just some plants

We have to put hardware cloth down about 14 inches and up about 10 inches to keep the ranting2.gif voles out. Then there's the fencing to keep the deer and bunnies out. I don't dare plant corn until I can figure out a way to keep the raccoons out - clever beasties. Barring unforeseen circumstances, I'll be able to restart the strawberry bed. Those pesky voles ate all the succulent roots off the others, and the plants died.

We had three varieties: Red Chief, Sparkle, and EarliGlow. Yummy.

Note: Sweet potatoes do not produce large tubers when grown in a flower box.

The tiller we got this spring works like a charm.

Last summer (2007), the only squash that produced was Guatemala Blue. It's delicious and makes a wonderful pumpkin pie. I'm hoping to plant those again next year.

I wandered over from BC when I saw Grinler's announcement a few minutes ago.

Whew! I've been so busy I nearly forgot what my BC password was.

p.s. I hope nobody else had to replace a tire on their car on Christmas Eve. I'm glad there wasn't any snow or ice to make things more difficult.
